../RED-FERRET-REVIEWS ATOMIC WRISTBAND

JULY 2010

RedFerret.com

The Atomic9 Bluetooth Wristband clips round your wrist and frees you from the burden of carrying your mobile phone in your hand. When the call comes in, just tap the wrist, and start talking. Sure you’ll look a bit gonky, but what’s that when it comes to progress? Nothing, we say. Nothing at all. More here.

It's the convenience of a Bluetooth headset without something electronic sticking out of your ear. It's a way of freeing yourself from your cell phone and any possible radiation damage. It's as fashion-forward as a "Dick Tracy" cartoon. It's the Bluetooth Wristband Speakerphone, and it's arrived. Wear it at home, in the garden, or anyplace else where people can't see you.

The wristband offers audio caller ID, voice activated commands for placing calls and answering the phone, and both vibration and sound alerts. It lets you roam up to 30 feet from your cell phone and even beeps when you go out of range. On one charge, it's good for up to 4 hours of talk time or 160 hours of standby. You can even use it to stream music. If you're sold, head over to Atomic9's Web site where you can get it for $99.99 in black or white.

GrungeBuds featured on the hottest teen magazine!

I freaking love this thing. The wristband is unobtrusive and fairly stylish in a geek-chic kinda way, but most importantly, it's *obvious*. There is nothing else you can mistake this wristband for, and you can't hide the speakerphone while you're using it. And, this is a very good thing. (See above: 'Things to keep in mind.')

Let’s face it, technology has finally gotten to the point where some of the gadgets we lusted after in cartoons and science fiction programs as children are now becoming a reality. I mean, the iPhone does even more than a Star Trek communicator (well everything but communicate intergalactically but I’m sure that is coming). The iPad looks like one of the tablet information devices that were so common in scifi shows 30 years ago. And Dick Tracy’s 2-Way Wrist Radio (first introduced on January 13th, 1946 and then upgraded to a 2-Way Wrist TV in 1964) how cool was that?!?!?

Well you may not be able to get the 2-Way Wrist TV yet (well actually that kind of arrives with my FedEx delivery of an iPhone 4 tomorrow) but thanks to Atomic9 you can now have your 2-Way Wrist Radio and wear it too.

Warning: Don’t Wear These Around a Tween Girl

I donned these GrungeBud Panda Love ear buds from Atomic 9 to do a little multitasking the other day: Listen to a book on tape, clean my house, and try out the sound quality on these adorable jewelry-like buds. My daughter was scarfing down blueberries (now in season) in the kitchen when I went in there to wipe cabinets and counters. I could see that her mouth was moving when I glanced at her. But these are the sort of ear bud that fit right into your ear and block out all sound (and the sound quality seemed fine). And they looked so cute on me, adorning my ears with little glittery pandas, the cord that connected them to my MP3 player looking just like a matching  necklace. And I was at interesting point in my book so I just grinned at her —  the mouth moving could have been simply blueberry-chomp related — and carried on cleaning and listening.

And then a dark look came over my sweet little girl and she leaned closer….and….grabbed the ear buds right out of my ears. Ouch!

“Those are much too cute for you to be wearing,” she told me cruelly. “They should be mine.”

I frequently borrow my husband’s headphones while working out.  The problem?  The ear buds that he finds comfortable absolutely KILL my ears!  No such problem with Grunge Buds, as set of comes with three different size options that are easily swapped out.

Of course, comfort aside, I was most impressed with the sound!  These teeny tiny little ear buds manage to block out background noise really well, and music sounds clear and crisp.  The set also comes with a microphone that is compatible with an iPhone or Blackberry Curve!

The sound quality is great, and of course, the Grunge Buds are visually appealing.  There are some really cool styles available, including my favorite, “The Valkyrie.”  Each style retails for $39.99 and is available through Atomic 9 online.  There are currently eight styles available and I hope to see the collection expand!
